Defending Against SPAM

Monday, March 9, 7-9 pm

SPAM - unsolicited and unwelcome commercial email - has become a major problem for anyone connected to the public network. But UNIX provides some excellent defenses against SPAM for those who take the trouble to learn them and to use them.

At the UUASC March meeting, member Matt Bartley will share what he has learned about defenses against junk email. This will include setting up email filtering with procmail (also useful for handling mailing list traffic), blocking rogue sites at the sendmail level, using the realtime blackhole list (RBL), and configuring sendmail 8.x to no longer be vulnerable to SPAM relaying. Matt will also offer some advice for hunting down SPAMmers and sending complaints to their ISPs.
