The concept of passwords as the first line of defense against intruders has been around as long as there have been multi-user operating systems. This month a discussion will be made concerning password security -- how passwords are encrypted -- and how programs like crack can be used to decrypt passwords. Additional discussion will cover enhanced password security systems such as shadow passwords and s/key.
