EXPERIENCE SUMMARY
I am able to perform the following typical intermediate and advanced
duties, projects and responsibilities for mission critical resources:
System Administration and Programming:
System installs and upgrades, performance monitoring, kernel tuning.
Perform system recoveries using various recovery tools such as fsck and
restore. Maintain security, user and resource access; install & maintain
local, network and remote printers, file systems, terminal emulators,
applications. Design and develop system backups and offsite rotations,
change management systems. Custom and off-the-shelf software & operating
system integration.
Database Administration:
Install and upgrade database software, performance monitoring and
tuning, design and maintain logical and physical database structures.
Setup and maintain 2 and 3 tier client/server architectures. Database
backup and reliability checking, perform database recoveries using
recovery tools such as ontape and oncheck, recover corrupted database
restores. Multiple instances, database consolidation.
(Primarily Informix, some Oracle & Sybase)
Network Administration and Engineering:
Use various networking tools such as ssh, telnet, rlogin, remsh, rcp,
ftp and ping to monitor and maintain networked systems. Use snoop, tcpdump
and other network analysis tools to troubleshoot problems, especially with
DNS, SMTP and FTP. Design, implement and maintain DNS, NIS, NFS and NTP
architectures. Network node administration accomplished with appropriate
applications; commercial programs such as OpenView and Optivity, and custom
applications written in C++ or shell scripts. Design, implement and maintain
DNS, NFS, FTP and Web servers. Setup and maintain enterprise network switches,
routers, and firewalls. Physical infrastructure maintenance.
EXPERIENCE
06/00 - present Trust Company of the West, Los Angeles, Ca.
Sr. Unix Systems Administrator
Systems and network administration of a medium sized internetwork of Unix
& Windows 2000 servers for one of the largest investment management firms
in Los Angeles. Maintained twenty HP & Sun Unix servers providing network,
firewall, database, application & file services.
Performed typical intermediate and advanced system and network
administration duties, supporting a 500+ user community.
Systems administered include eleven HP9000/800 series computers, ranging
from D class through K class, and nine Suns, ranging from Ultra 2's
through E450's, and various Windows 2000 and Redhat Linux servers involved
with my duties.
Additional projects & responsibilities:
- Use network analysis tools such as snoop, tcpdump, Ethereal & Openview to
troubleshoot network problems, especially with firewalls, DNS, FTP, & SMTP.
- Setup & maintain Nortel LAN/WAN networking equipment: Passport 8600 switches,
Baystack switches (BPS's, 450's), ARN/ASN/BCN routers; Optivity & Omniview.
- Troubleshoot & fix LAN connectivity problems.
- Setup & maintain Checkpoint Firewalls & DMZ's on Nokias, Suns & HP's.
- Set routes and proxy arps for NAT source hide.
- Research, analyze & evaluate Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and
Managed Security providers. IDS's included Real Secure, Manhunt & Snort.
- Run internal security audits.
- Design, setup & maintain intranet, extranet & internet DNS.
- Design BIND 9 split DNS, views, & security for international extranet.
- Troubleshoot & configure Windows Dynamic DNS (DDNS) & DHCP problems.

Unix Systems Consultant (TekSystems)
Systems, database, and network administration of a small international
network of Unix and NT servers for one of the largest law firms in
Los Angeles. Eighteen NT and Netware servers exchanged data with three
Unix servers, including one of HP's larger machines, a 16 cpu V2200 with
16gb of memory supporting 128gb of Informix databases.
Performed typical intermediate and advanced system, database and network
administration duties, supporting a 150+ user community.
Systems administered include two HP9000/800 series computers, a V2200
and an H70, running HP-UX v11 and v10.20, respectively; and a Data
General Aviion AV/5500. Also developed for and administered NT v4 on
standard PC's.
Primary projects were
- Site survey and installation of the V2200 system. Software
installation included HPUX v11, Informix v7.30, and Elite v7.2 and
Elite for Windows, Word Perfect for Unix, Reflection X-windows,
- Implemented HP Omniback backups with a DLT library. File and database
restore tests. Disk crash failover tests.
- Conversion of a nationwide network of Equitrac DOS PC's to Windows
NT servers, which included installing the Samba SMB file server to
share files between Unix and NT.
- Three-way share of Unix file systems using NFS, Samba and Netware for Unix.
- Extensive script development for Unix ksh and NT cmd shells.
- and, of course, Y2K upgrades and fixes.
Also: Tuned and monitored applications with Glance, sar, vmstat & netstat.
Parallel applications testing. Root disk rebuilds. Netscape Web server
setup & administration. Database consolidation.
11/97 - 05/98 Aera Energy, Bakersfield, Ca.
Unix Systems Consultant (TekSystems)
Systems, database and network administration of a large Wide Area
Network of Unix servers for a startup venture between Shell & Mobil
Oil Co's. Supported over 18 servers and 200 workstations at the company
headquarters and in the oil fields of the San Joaquin Valley.
Performed typical intermediate and advanced system and network
administration duties, supporting a 200+ user community.
Systems administered include HP9000 K460 and G70 servers, various
HP/700 series servers and workstations, SGI Oxygen and Sun workstations,
and some work with SGI's Origin 2000 servers, Sun's Enterprise servers,
and IBM AIX servers.
Primary projects were
- Run and maintain HP, Sun, and SGI database, appl. and net servers.
- Troubleshoot workstations. Performance analysis.
- Support geophysical applications: Landmark, Open Works, EarthVision.

Systems, database, and network administration of a nationwide network
of Sequent, NCR & Sun machines. Over forty hosts provided real
estate, mortgage, title, and appraisal services.
Performed typical intermediate and advanced system, database and network
administration duties. Supported a 200+ user community.
Systems administered included Sequent S5000/SE20's using DYNIX/ptx,
NCR 68k systems using Unix SVR3, and PC workstations using Sun
Solaris, Linux and Windows NT.
